Deio Owen begins his term as NUS Wales President after being elected to the role by students from across Wales.
Originally from near Pwllheli, Deio is an experienced activist and leader within the student movement.
He was the student union president at Coleg Meirion Dwyfor and sat on the board of governors of Grŵp Llandrillo Menai as a student governor, representing over 20,000 further education students across North Wales.
He would go on to become the first Vice President for Welsh Language, Community and Culture at Cardiff Student Union.
Deio is also a trustee at the Urdd, Wales’s largest youth organisation, which provides opportunities for young people to take part in a range of experiences through the medium of Welsh.
Deio takes over the role from predecessor Orla Tarn, after being elected by student representatives at the NUS Wales Conference in March 2024.
During a two year term, he will represent the interests of more than 250,000 apprentices, learners and students in Wales, as well as working alongside other elected officers from across the UK.
Deio Owen said: “I'm really excited to start my new role. There's never been a more important time to fight for a better future for learners, student's unions, and society as a whole.”
He continued: “I'm passionate about Cymraeg, representation, working with SUs and making the everyday lives of students better.”
